Chapter Twenty

State Police officer Jeff Whitney was having a bad day and trying to shake it off. He’d spent the morning at the National Guard qualifying range, watching State Police Academy rookies handle their weapons like ten-year-olds. Most would fail the proficiency requirements and it was going to reflect on him. He parked his cruiser in his assigned space at State Police Headquarters on the south end of Cerrillos Road and trudged down the hallway to his office. Tossing his briefcase on the couch, he checked his messages.

Shortly before noon, he peeked through the door of Police Chief Suazo’s office and ambled over to Patsy Lujan’s desk in an office adjacent to the secretarial pool. Although Patsy considered herself a tad on the abundant side, she wore her clothes well. Her long leather boots and short skirt accentuated her muscular legs. A nice rack squeezing through the edges of her tank top garnered her a few extra points on Whitney’s scale. Hell, he wasn’t going to marry her, he was just going to poke around for information, and if he had to sleep with her, he could deal with that. At least she wasn’t so butt ugly he’d have to cover her face.

“Miss Patsy, you get prettier every day,” Whitney drawled as he removed his hat and sunglasses in a well-choreographed movement. He smiled his most seductive smile and licked his lips for added effect, a technique he had perfected over many years of flirting with women, whether he was interested or not.

Patsy blushed, fanned herself with a file folder and flashed him a big smile. “Oh, Cap-ten Whitney, you say that to all the girls. I’ve heard you.”

She spoke with a strong Spanish accent that seemed to pop up when least expected, and it reminded him of Speedy Gonzales, the fastest raton in all of Me-hi-co.

“Only to the pretty ones, Patsy. That turquoise color sure looks nice on you. Brings out your eyes.” He bent toward her, his nose almost touching hers.

“Stop, already,” she chortled. “What can I do for you? The Chief’s out until next Fry-dee.”

“Didn’t come to see the Chief, pretty lady. Thought we might catch a bite to eat tonight, maybe a movie? I know it’s awfully short notice. New restaurant opened up at the Railyard. They say the steaks are pretty good.”

Patsy looked surprised. “We, as in you and me?” She giggled.

“Of course I mean you. You’re the prettiest lady in the room. That is, unless you have other plans?” Whitney knew he was bending the rules about dating hired help, but he wasn’t going on a date. He was on a mission.

“Well?” he added, a sly grin on his face, “What do you think?”

“Oh sure, I guess. Yeah, that would be n-nice,” Patsy stammered.

“Pick you up at seven?” He smiled again.

“Yes, of course,” she said, handing him a slip of paper with her address and cell number.

“See you later, Sweetie.” He winked.

Patsy let out a contented sigh and reshuffled the papers on her desk.

Whitney walked out to the parking lot and sat in his squad car for a few minutes.
